It was only as recently as the early twentieth century, however, that deliberate and planned selective breeding began to shift the genetic makeup of do- mesticated populations in predetermined directions. Improvements in all areas of animal husbandry, including breeding and genetics, reproductive physiology, nutrition, and animal health, can unintentionally contribute to the decline in the number and diversity of breeds and types. Introduction: During the past decade, geneticists have constructed detailed maps of the human genome and cloned scores of Mendelian disease genes. Loss of genetic diver- sity threatens livestock production systems throughout the world. Unlike plants, which can be easily conserved in seed banks, a large portion of livestock genetic diversity relies on live populations and their interactions with the environment.
This report has been reviewed by a group other than the authors according to procedures approved by a Report Review Committee consisting of members of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the Insti- tute of Medicine. A major ongoing challenge is how to best utilize this variation to meet short-term demands whilst also conserving it for longer-term possible use. In addition to the examination of crop plants, the committee's main report will address the legal, political, economic, and social issues surrounding global genetic resources management as they relate to agricultural imperatives. We are providing some tools to breeders and graduate students in genetics and breeding field.
